Getting started
From install to your first step-powered attack in a few minutes. Step On It: Trail Quest reads your steps from Android Health Connect. Every new step you walk becomes one attack on the trail.
Install the app
- Copy the APK to your phone, or download it there.
- Open it. Android asks you to allow installs from that app (your browser or file manager). Allow it for this install.
- Tap Install. The home screen shows the game as Step On It.
Updating
A newer APK installs over the old one and keeps your save. Android refuses an update that is signed with a different key. Removing the app to get past that deletes the save on the phone, so turn on cloud backup first if you want to keep your progress.
Connect your steps
The game never counts steps itself. It reads the step totals that Health Connect already keeps.
- Health Connect: built into Settings on Android 14 and newer. On Android 9–13, install the Health Connect app from the Play Store. The game shows a button for it when it is missing or out of date.
- Grant access: on first launch the game asks to read Steps. That is the only permission it needs. You can revoke it in Health Connect at any time.
- Add your watch (optional): make the watch's own app write steps to Health Connect, for example Fitbit for a Pixel Watch or Samsung Health for a Galaxy Watch. Health Connect merges phone and watch, so steps are never counted twice.
Which steps count
- Only steps walked after your first launch count. Older history never becomes attacks.
- Steps are imported when you open or return to the app, or when you tap Check for new steps under Steps & status. Watch steps can reach Health Connect late; they count once they arrive.
- Health Connect lets apps read about 30 days back. Open the game at least once a month, or older steps in a long gap can be missed. The game warns you when that happens.
Your first launch
- Your Wanderer starts in Sunny Meadow, Area 1, against a 10 HP Meadow Gloopling.
- Walk. Each new step is one attack. A large batch of steps is resolved instantly and summarised as one line, for example "+1,250 steps → 1,250 attacks · 12 defeated · +480 gold".
- Spend gold under Upgrades › Heroes: the first hero level costs 10 gold and the first upgrade tier costs 20.
- Area 2 recruits the Trail Ranger and Area 3 the Pathfinder Mage.
Not sure what to buy next? The strategy guide covers it.
Where everything is
The game is one fixed screen with menus that open over the battle. Nothing scrolls.
| Place | What you find there |
|---|---|
| Top bar | Biome and area, your hero, the save status, and your counters: steps, damage per step and gold. Big numbers are shortened (1.2M); exact values are read out by TalkBack. |
| Battle plate | The current foe, its HP and the last result. While auto-attack is paused it shows your saved steps and the Strike / All buttons. |
| Hero plate | Your walking hero. Tap it to open the Heroes page. |
| Upgrades | Heroes: pick a hero, train levels, buy tiers. Outfitter: buy and equip looks, which never change combat. |
| Progress | Levels: current area, next objective and the area track. Ascension: what a reset costs and the renown it would bank. Badges: all 57 achievements. |
| Steps & status | Steps: totals, the last import, the auto-attack switch and Check for new steps. Connection: Health Connect permission and errors, and the save and backup status. |
| Settings | Help: how to play. Backup: turn cloud backup on or off, sign in, or delete your cloud data. |
| Town | Switchback Hollow: the Hearth Tavern (heroes), the quest board, the Outfitter and the dungeon gate to the Active Trial. |
Accessibility
- Reduced motion: when Android's animations are turned off, every animation shows a still frame instead. You never miss an outcome, because results are always written as text.
- TalkBack: counters, HP, buttons and switches have spoken names and states. Import results are announced politely without interrupting.
- Touch targets: controls are at least 48 dp. Upgrade tiers and ascension need a second tap to confirm.
- Colour: states are never shown by colour alone. Boss fights also say "Boss", and HP bars have ten-percent ticks.
- Large text: at large font sizes the screen hides decoration first. The essentials (area, counters, HP, menus) always stay visible.
