What's new
The game's history during the alpha, newest first. Dates are 2026.
18 October: Step On It: Trail Quest
- New name. The game is now Step On It: Trail Quest, shown as "Step On It" on the home screen.
- Shoes are the weapons. The Wanderer swings a boot, the Trail Ranger kicks (Focus Strikes land a bigger power-kick burst), and the Pathfinder Mage throws an enchanted shoe that arcs to the foe. Heroes keep their outfits' looks. See Heroes.
- Shoe-themed upgrades. Ranger and Mage tiers are renamed, for example Swift Laces, Rhythm Kick, Ember Insoles and Starlit Slippers. The effects are unchanged.
- Rules v3: late-game ascension. Ascension now opens at Area 50, and renown is banked from your deepest run (⌊(area − 10)² ÷ 10⌋), so only going deeper earns more. Saves move from v2 to v3 automatically and keep their run and renown. See Economy & ascension.
- Fix: the battle no longer flashes "Loading artwork…" when a new foe appears.
- This wiki launched.
17 October: the endless trail
- Rules v2: endless economy. Enemy health grows about 25% per area, rewards follow health, and every 10th area ends with an Elder biome boss. Endless hero levels (+10% price per level, ×2 damage every 25 levels) mean gold always has a use. Ascension pays renown at +25% damage each. Saves at Area 11 or deeper converted once with a free ascension.
- Rotating biomes. Ten areas per biome, all 26 walking foes in use, and the five biomes repeat as numbered laps.
- Auto-attack switch. Pause it to save steps, then fire them with Strike / All or by switching back on.
- Active Trial is now entered from the town's dungeon gate.
- Opt-in cloud backup with an email and password account. Restore on a new phone without double rewards.
- Fix: "Artwork unavailable" when a newer foe appeared.
15–16 October: heroes and town
- Three gameplay heroes (Wanderer, Trail Ranger, Pathfinder Mage) with upgrade ladders, 57 badges, and the first opt-in ascension (rules v1).
- Manual/automatic modes and attack buttons retired: steps resolve as they arrive.
- The town of Switchback Hollow, with the tavern, quest board, Outfitter and dungeon gate.
- A fixed game screen with overlay menus, and the first original pixel-art set.
Earlier
- An offline Android prototype: Health Connect step import, one step = one attack, an SQLite save with a sync outbox, and a Go/PostgreSQL sync API.
